For the first time, Euro-ISME has participated in the Consortium which rewards every year outstanding efforts towards promoting European citizenship and European security and defense awareness”, defined as the civic aspect of the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP). The Award was created in 2011 by the French Association “Civisme, Défense, Armée, Nation “ (CiDAN), together with the European Security and Defense Association. It is placed under the High Patronage of the President of the European Council, the Representation in France of the European Commission and benefits of a special support from the President of the French Republic.
This year, Euro-ISME has joined the strong partnership with the German Group ProPress, the Robert Schuman Foundation and the Gesellschaft für Sicherheitspolitik e.V. In joining this influential group, Euro-ISME initiated the creation of the “European Award for Military Ethics” as a new category rewarding sustainable activities of institutions, organisations or individuals in the perspective of
– fostering ethical education in the armed forces
– offering platforms for discussion and exchange of ideas on professional responsibility and military ethics
– promoting comprehensive and systematic analysis in the field of military ethics and of the law of armed conflict in accordance with the principles of human rights
– promoting the harmonization of ethical principles and standards of conduct in relation to the creation of a shared culture of responsibility and ethical thinking in Europe.
The jury was chaired by Robert Walter MP, President of the European Security and Defence Association who also solemnly awarded the prize on the 3rd of December during a special ceremony organised in the frame of the 13. Berlin Security Conference 2014 .
With about 100 high ranking international speakers – the BSC has developed over the years to become one of the most important events on European Security and Defence Policy. Outstanding personalities, policy-makers, industrials and military gathered in the modern congress center in Berlin and illuminated the ceremony.
By creating the Special Prize of the European Award in the category “Military Ethics”, Euro-ISME promotes a focus for analysis, development and sharing of best practice in this important area of a common security and defence culture.
Euro-ISME is supported by the Charles Leopold Mayer Foundation, and its institutional members Defence Academy of the UK, King’s College London, Ledaership Tranining Centre Koblenz, Research Center of the Military Academy of Saint-Cyr and the Inamori International Centre for Ethics and Excellence (Case Western Reserve University) .
