Panel with EuroISME executive directors and Dr. Marie-des-Neiges Ruffo de Calabre

At the invitation of the French Ministry for Defence, EuroISME’s Executive Directors as well as EuroISME’s member Marie-des-Neiges Ruffo offered their views on the relation between the enhancement of soldiers and military ethics. It remains a slippery subject, where artificial intelligence, bio-chemistry, sociology, ethics and other sciences meet.

The workshop took place on January 15, 2019, at the École Militaire in Paris. With some 80 participants, including operational commanders, the workshop provided a range of new insights. One of the observations made was that politicians hardly pay attention to human enhancement in a military context, focussing instead on autonomous weapons systems.

Given the interest which the participants demonstrated for the ethical perspective – including the perspective of ethical leadership – the intention is to plan another workshop later this year.
