EuroISMEPrize2017 CoverENGOn May 31 2017 in Brussels, EuroISME’s prize for the best student thesis written on military ethics, has been awarded to Ms. Samantha Hope of the UK. The title of her thesis is:

Is it possible to prevent sexual violence against women, men and children, or only to manage the after-effects?

Speaking on behalf of the jury, Lt.Col. (ret) Daniel Beaudoin stated that “in a very well argued, soundly structured and excellently researched paper, Mr. Hope addresses a tragic topic”. In her acceptance speech, Ms. Hope noted how little empirical research is conducted in this area, particularly when it comes to the issue of women becoming the perpetrators rather than the victims. She identified four current methods for preventing rape as a tool of war; applying them to the case of Daesh, she subsequently put forward proposals to improve current prevention methods.
